Guide to WADA Prohibited List

Peptide Hormones

The second instalment in this series is peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics. Considered by the Australian sports anti–doping authority as the new generation of substances taken by athletes, they are often mistaken as being permitted by WADA when in fact the opposite is true. Hormones are composed of a few amino acids which bring about a series of chemical reactions that change the metabolism within the cell. This guide will highlight a few examples of the products that are included in this section.

HGH

Human Growth Hormone (HGH) can also be known as somatotrophic hormone and somatrophin. It increases muscle mass and reduces fat storage whilst increasing muscle recovery. The side effects of taking this hormone however are an increased risk of cardiac arrest, Hypothyroidism, impotence and gigantism.

EPO

Erythropoietin (EPO) is also known as MCVD 2 and has been in the press the last few years as it was popular among cyclists in the late 90’s to mid 00’s. EPO is injected into the body which helps increase red blood cells meaning more oxygen can be delivered to the muscle which in turn helps the athlete to last longer. The side effects of this drug however can lead to thickening of the blood that can lead to blood clots, strokes and cardiac arrest.

IGF-1

Insulin like growth factor 1, also known as somatomedin C, occurs naturally within the body and is an important factor in a child’s growth. The reason it is taken by athletes is due to the perceived benefits including increased recovery and muscle building. The side effects of this substance include an increase of growth hormone by the pituitary gland which can cause a swelling of the hands, feet, nose, internal organs and several types of cancer. One product that contains IGF–1 is deer antler spray.
