HMB

Overview

β-Hydroxy β-Methylbutyrate or HMB as it is otherwise known is a chemical component of  a protein called leucine.

Studies have observed differences in body composition when compared to a placebo group, (1,2). Research has also found an increase in lean leg mass but not overall muscle mass, (3,4) with one study finding an increase in muscle strength after taking 1.5g/day for 24 weeks, (4).

Further research is needed however as most studies used HMB with other ingredients that may contribute in the increases observed (i.e, Caffiene, Creatine, etc….).
